Best Temperature for Furnace Efficiency

If you are looking to save money on your heating expenses, you may be wondering what is the best temperature for furnace efficiency. The answer to this question is simpler than you think. The best temperature for furnace efficiency is the temperature that makes you the most comfortable.

According to the Kansas State University Extension, furnaces work most efficiently when their run times are longer. In other words, furnaces that run continuously are more efficient than furnaces that turn on and off several times throughout the day.

When your home reaches your desired temperature and your furnace turns off, the air in your home is not the only thing that begins to cool. All of your furniture and belongings begin to cool down as well. Then, once your furnace turns back on again, it not only has to warm the air of your home, but your furniture and possessions as well. Furnaces that have to continually reheat your home work less efficiently than furnaces that keep your home at a steady temperature.

This does not mean that there will never be temperature fluctuations in your home, however. Furnaces typically fluctuate a degree or two above and below your set temperature point so that they do not have to turn on and off so frequently, and it is fine to turn the temperature down at night or when you are gone during the day. The problem occurs, however, when you constantly change the thermostat to turn the furnace on and off again. It is best to set the thermostat and leave it alone.

While leaving your thermostat alone is the easiest and most practical way to increase your furnace efficiency, there are a few other steps you can take as well. Invest in a newer, energy efficient furnace if yours is old and outdated, have an expert at AirCon Service Company service your furnace when it needs it, and insulate your home well to decrease leaks and drafts. Then you will be able to enjoy a comfortable home while your furnace runs efficiently in the background.
